The English newspaper “The Telegraph” published an article on studies conducted by the University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong Eye Hospital, regarding the benefits of green tea in relation to eye diseases.
The study is based on antioxidant effects attributed earlier to green tea. In this case they concluded that the consumption of green tea benefits the eye against oxidative extress, a fact that is beneficial to prevent glaucoma and other eye diseases.
Originally published in the “Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry”, they explain that catechins, a type of antioxidant present in green tea, can pass after consumption to the eye tissues. These conclusions were validated after a study in laboratory rats. They also discuss the presence in the catechins of vitamin C, E, lutein and zeaxanthin.
