The most expensive tea in the world today is Da Hong Pao tea, an oolong variety that comes from the Wuyi region in Fujian province, China.
The price of Da Hong Pao tea can be astronomical, easily surpassing the price of gold year after year (more than €30,000/kilo).
Specifically, we are referring to the leaves that are collected from the original shrubs selected in their day by the emperor, who, by marking them with a red mantle, gave this variety its name. Da Hong Bao means “Red Cloak”.
The scarcity of this particular variety, the high demand and its exceptional quality, create a perfect storm to make Da Hong Pao the most expensive tea in the world by far.
Of course, it is a tea that commercially never leaves Asia. The varieties that come to Europe, for example, are descendants of these original strains. Even though they are of high quality, they no longer have the exclusivity mentioned above.
An example is the Oolong Shuixian Wuyi Rock that we have at Fresh Chinese Tea, available in our store in Barcelona and in our online store by clicking here.
