Today we enjoy a very different oolong tea variety: Lan Gui Ren. It is different for its shape, an oolong tea leaf with a powder coating of tea, ginseng and licorice herb. To this presentation we add an aroma with a lot of presence, with touches of licorice.
We prepare the infusion using a Gaiwan glass, to see how well this Lan Gui Ren opens its leaves. We add about three grams of tea, and water at about 90 degrees, to make an infusion of about five minutes.
The first thing that takes our attention when observing the infusion is to see how the tea tablets slowly dissolve. It looks like a carbonated drink, but it’s just the Ginseng coating and powdered licorice grass, letting the oolong tea leaves open and poke. As the infusion time passes, the color of this Lan Gui Ren becomes darker, and the aroma is really dense. Once the infusion is ready we will enjoy this Lan Gui Ren.
The color is of a dark amber, with light golden touches. The taste is really dense, with a sweet touch very marked licorice. Well, this is not a variety of pure tea, but rather a recipe that adds several ingredients to an oolong tea base.
That is why both the taste and aroma are very powerful, compared to pure varieties. And the same goes for the aftertaste, which is really lasting. In short, this is what would be a tea with licorice, adding ginseng, which is not noticeable in the flavor but in its effects. A perfect tea for charging the batteries in the morning or after a good exercise session, Lan Gui Ren is a variety of oolong tea that does not go unnoticed, being able to take both cold and hot. And also highly recommended to start with tea, especially if you like more sweet flavors.
