Hello!! Today in our renowned section “Tea Time – tea tasting” we enjoy a green tea typical of Fujian Province of China: Fujian Maofeng.
The fact that include where it comes from in its name is quite typical in many varieties of tea. In this case in particular, it adds value, due that that Fujian province is one of the most prestigious in China as far as tea cultivation is concerned.
This Maofeng green tea is from the 2016 harvest, so extrapolating an example to understand, it is as if we were talking about a young Rioja wine. The savoir faire of an area of long tradition, but without having a premium grade tea. This is appreciated, especially when we talk about prices. Of course, it has in its favor that it is a fresh tea, so let’s start with more details.
The first impression is not only the aroma, more dense than usual in green tea, but also in the shape of its leaves. Whole, curly, reminiscent of the variety Liu An Gua Pian. But only in the shape of the leaves, since the aroma is different.
We prepare the infusion by adding a teaspoon (about 3-4 grams) to the teapot, in which we pour water at about 70°C for a short brewing time: 2 minutes.
The leaves open, showing themselves whole. They look great, really nice, with a dark green color and a medium-big size. At this point the infusion gives off a soft aroma, which invites us to try this green tea.
The taste is smooth. It has a slightly bitter point at the beginning, which reminds you that it is still a green tea, but that is diluted leaving a dense and pleasant aftertaste. It is this aftertaste, not so typical of green tea, where you discover the personality and character of this tea.
In resume, Fujian Maofeng green tea is distinguished by being a mild tea, without having the fresh grass aroma and flavor of a Longjing green tea, but with a more dense aroma and flavor. In fact, it is a good choice for people who usually drink black tea and want to give a try to the green tea varieties.
