We continue in our Tea Time with another variety of Japanese green tea, Genmaicha. A famous green tea in Japan, as a curiosity, in the past was considered as low grade, because tea was mixed with rice. After that, has become a “japanese cocktail” and gained popularity in its own merits.
The Japanese green tea Genmaicha we enjoy today consists of Japanese Sencha green tea, roasted brown rice amb popcorn pieces, garnished with matcha tea powder for added flavor. In this case the matcha would like some sort of glaze.
First impression leaves mild aroma dominated by green tea. So we prepare the infusion with water at moderate temperature (about 70 degrees), which let stand a few minutes after reaching the boiling point. We drag infusion time a little more than usual for green teas (about 3 minutes), in order to get more flavor and taste from the roasted rice.
Aroma gives you a pleasant surprise before you even get to try it. At the time that water is poured it releases a very pleasant aroma, and rice take the leading role in this regard. At that moment you understand why the name of this tea. Genmaicha means, literally translated from Japanese, “brown rice tea”.
Very good taste, soft and dense, in which both tea and rice combine in the right way. Roasted taste, which gaves you a very good mouthfeel on the first time. The color of the infusion is olive green, leaving a little shady grounds in the bottom of the cup. And the last aftertaste remains, and it coould not it be otherwise, is the matcha green tea, so you do not forget that what you are drinking is tea.
For its roasted flavor is a very good choice for now that cold season has just started. In addition, this tea helps with slow digestion, and that the fact that is being mixed with rice makes it lower-caffeine than if we took a normal pure green tea.
